The events of October 7 sent shockwaves across the world and brought to the forefront once again a conflict that has been ongoing for 75 years. The Israeli government’s response to Hamas’s attack was prompt – it embarked on a war of magnitude in Gaza, claiming it needed to take out Hamas and rescue the captives. At first, the consensus of Western powers seemed solid: Israel has the right to fight back against Hamas. But more than five months later, Israel’s military was facing criticism worldwide, including allegations that it is committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing and even genocide.
This film will explore whether Israel is breaking international law and, if so, why are Western powers, in particular the United States, silent.

Given that some are of the opinion that Israel will bring the fight against Hizbollah on Lebanese soil very soon, here could be one of the real reasons: Israel’s shortage of fresh water could be solved if the land through which the Litani River flows on its way to the Mediterranean became part of Israel. Not only could the Litani provide the volume of water Israel so desperately needs, but it’s a clean source of water, with very low salinity. It could help repair the water sources that Israel’s overuse has turned salty and brackish. This has been understood by Israel for a very long time, and we can see the Litani River cropping up in Israeli history on a regular basis.

ABSTRACT
Recent scholarship shows that informed traders increasingly disguise trades in economically linked securities such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Linking that work to longstanding literature on financial markets’ reactions to military conflict, we document a significant spike in short selling in the principal Israeli-company ETF days before the October 7 Hamas attack. The short selling that day far exceeded the short selling that occurred during numerous other periods of crisis, including the recession following the financial crisis, the 2014 Israel-Gaza war, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, we identify increases in short selling before the attack in dozens of Israeli companies traded in Tel Aviv. For one Israeli company alone, 4.43 million new shares sold short over the September 14 to October 5 period yielded profits (or approximates avoided losses) of 3.2 billion NIS on that additional short selling. Although we see no aggregate increase in shorting of Israeli companies on U.S. exchanges, we do identify a sharp and unusual increase, just before the
attacks, in trading in risky short-dated options on these companies expiring just after the attacks.
We identify similar patterns in the Israeli ETF at times when it was reported that Hamas was
planning to execute a similar attack as in October. Our findings suggest that traders informed
about the coming attacks profited from these tragic events, and consistent with prior literature we show that trading of this kind occurs in gaps in U.S. and international enforcement of legal prohibitions on informed trading. We contribute to the growing literature on trading related to geopolitical events and offer suggestions for policymakers concerned about profitable trading on the basis of information about coming military conflict.

A picture of a 5-year old child in a refugee camp in Gaza which I saw on 24th November left me too shattered to find the inner calm necessary to be able to produce anything for this blog until a couple of minutes ago. An infographic published on the Qatari news outlet Al-Jazeera illustrating the raw facts about the conflict (‘What happens in Gaza every hour’) prompted me to check the source of the data presented on 2023-11-01, namely the OCHA (United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs). As the keywords I typed in the internal search engine of the OCHA’s website did not yield any results (https://www.unocha.org/results?q=What+happens+hour+in+Gaza), I simply moved back in time in the section ‘news and stories’ of their website until I retrieved an article dated 1st November. The picture chosen to illustrate the OCHA’s communiqué about the situation in Gaza which was released on that date, namely that of a little girl in a schoolyard in Gaza, cut through my soul like a sharp blade would through a lump of butter left out at room temperature for some time on a warm summer day. How could anybody not feel pity for a 5-year old standing right in the foreground, hair and clothes looking a little dishevelled, her fragility being conveyed almost subliminally by the absence of any adults in the picture and this little girl standing a few metres away from the other children, almost in the open as it were, the colours of her skin (a kind of golden white) and of the garment she is wearing (close to pastel peach) being in strong contrast to the rather ominous-looking darker hues of the courtyard’s asphalt, the stains on the face of the doll (whose hair or bonnet is of a vibrant crimson, almost the colour of blood) she is clutching, while with her head thrown back her big childish eyes are looking in wonder at the sky for what can only be an Israeli warplane on a military mission (most likely to bomb to smithereens various pieces of civilian infrastructure in Gaza). Therefore the question which has been nagging my mind ever since my eyes came across this photographic embodiment of the innocence of a child (Aya is staring at a warplane instead of running for cover): ‘is Aya still alive?’ If so, I hope that she has not been wounded in any of the raids which subsequently took place and that everything may go well for Aya, her family and the group of children with her on this photo in the weeks, months and years ahead. Amen.
Those who are cowardly bombing children and women under the spurious ground that the building where these children have sought refuge is a Hamas operation command centre are not doing their souls any good; it is as simple as that. Even if left unanswered in this world, such crimes will not be in the next.

The commanders (and politicians) who gave the orders to bomb, shell, fire at or even storm hospitals, ambulances, etc. should be tried as war criminals. So should the politicians in the so-called West and elsewhere who are allowing such atrocities to take place. I really cannot come to terms with the fact that such a tragedy is unfolding before our very eyes with so little opposition from the international community. This is a huge scar on the collective conscience of humanity. This does not bode well for all of us because we are being complicit unless we have voiced our opposition to this slow but methodical genocide of the Palestinian people. Life is a test and our inaction will not weigh in our favour when our souls go through the life-review after having departed this material world...

The way in which events have started to unfold is frightening to me. Not only because of the strong emotions stimulated, or rather kindled, by more than a month of horrendous violence, death and destruction (and the ensuing polarisation which has taken hold of large groups of people in many countries), this after a year and nine months of an even much deadlier war in Europe (which has also seen the fuelling of very virulent xenophobic sentiments directed against another European people, the Russians, used as a quasi scapegoat for all of the problems which the leaders of the EU have not been able to solve for now almost a generation of Europeans, in my opinion) and after more than 2 years of the COVID scam, but also because the build-up of such tensions in the general public which to me seems to have gathered even more momentum over the past three or four days, so that I fear that these powerful passions might have been steered in such a way by the media and those who control them so as to have the average Westerner expect, or rather long for, the proverbial match being thrown on the Middle-East powder keg in the form of a false flag event (possibly an attack on one of the US aircraft carriers) with a view to creating a kind of massive collective cathartic release of all of the pent-up frustrations and negative emotions which have been accumulating in our bosoms even more heavily since March 2020...

In this 29-minute interview aired on 9th November, the former British intelligence officer and ceasefire negotiator between the Israelis and the Palestinians in 2002 and 2003 Alastair Crooke provides his perspective on the war which is taking place in Gaza, the possibility that this conflict might involve neighbouring countries (he gives his take on Liban’s Hezbollah and on some of the Iraqi militia, which he sees as causing a ‘slow boiling of the American defence frog’ so as to force Israel to stop its military intervention against Gaza), the unflinching support provided to Israel by western powers, the ongoing genocide of the Gazan people (he uses the expression ‘ethnic cleansing’ five times and ‘cleansing’ on its own twice), together with what he sees as the USA’s inability to rein in the desire for revenge on the Gazan people which he estimates is shared by 80 percent of the Israeli population, this within a quasi eschatological context. He also offers his analysis on the difficulties he reckons the Israelis are facing in taking the fight to Hamas given that its members are able to hide deep underground and pop up to the surface to conduct military raids against Israeli forces and Israel, to the extent that he is of the opinion that Hamas has been little affected by Israel’s intensive bombardment of Gaza.
