Summary: Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, recently received an award from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, apparently as an esteemed goalkeeper; clip and transcript.

Ursula von der Lügen: ‘Instead we introduced a transparency mechanism.

Ursula von der Lügen (lügen means to lie and Lüge means a lie in German) three days ago received an award from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, as an esteemed ‘goal KEEPER...  There is so much information, expressed indirectly (‘in between the lines’, as the saying goes), in this short clip of three minutes and twenty-seven seconds that a lengthy article could be written about it. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to do so. So a transcript with a little green here and there is all I shall offer – save for three additional comments on my part: George Soros has a network of foundations called ‘the open society foundation’; the red background is so well suited to Ursula von der Lügen because it makes the devil in her really stand out (remember that for Christians, the devil is the father of lies [John 8:44]; the president of the EU commission seems to be on good terms with Bill Gates because she addresses him as ‘Bill’.

TRANSCRIPT

It is such an honour to receive this award and please allow me to dedicate it and to share it with millions of ordinary Europeans who have helped us all to make it through the pandemic – from the scientists who developed the life saving vaccines to the frontline workers in our hospitals and the essential services. This award is also for them, this is for sure.

I wanted to share three major lessons that I’ve learned during that time.

The first is: create excellence through competition. You might remember that some regions dictated what kind of research should be done on vaccine and they failed. We have not picked one innovator but we allowed for different ones to compete while creating a conducive environment through funding. So we harnessed the power of the private sector and it should not surprise us that the open societies developed and produced billions of life saving vaccines.

The second lesson I’ve learned: stay open to the world. You might remember, and can imagine, that the pressure to close borders and to ban vaccine exports was huge but different from almost all other regions in the world we resisted the temptation. Instead we introduced a transparency mechanism. And that created trust; trust among member states that distribution is fair; trust among our partners abroad that we’re also relying on our vaccines; and trust in equal treatment for manufacturing companies.

And the third lesson that I’ve learned is: share technology and know-how with the world. Today Africa is importing 99% of all necessary vaccines and this is not sustainable. So we have started to team up with Africa and Latin America to create overtime manufacturing capacity and the necessary ecosystem in the region, for the region – from the mRNA technology to the enabling regulatory environment, to skills development. All this had to be put in place, but that’s the way to go.

Now, did all go according to plan? Not at all. And let us remember that there was a huge global lack of preparedness – and you, Bill, predicted it already and warned us in a famous video on YouTube in 2015 –, but we’ve learned our lesson and the global preparedness system is under construction. So with these words, thank you very much for this award. I’m very honoured and I’m pleased for that. Thank you so much.
