Summary: allegations have been made by top Russian officials that the regime in Kiev intends to detonate a so-called ‘dirty bomb’ in Ukraine with the objective of drawing NATO into the conflict; clip (embedded); transcript; several links (at the bottom).

A dirty bomb to be detonated in Ukraine by the Kiev regime?

Top officials in the government and military of Russia have been warning of the imminent use of a so-called ‘dirty bomb’ by the Kiev regime in Ukraine over the past few days. And over the weekend, such concerns were voiced directly in rare telephone calls by the chief of Russia’s general staff, Valery Gerasimov, and by Sergey Shoigu, the Russian Defence Minister, to their counterparts in the US, the UK, France and Turkey. On Monday, Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow’s ambassador to the United Nations, wrote a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in which he stated that Russia would ‘regard the use of a dirty bomb by the Kiev regime as an act of nuclear terrorism’. So the stakes seem to be pretty high if Zelensky (or the forces behind him) were to activate their own version of the ‘Samson Option’.

According to the pro-Russian military analysis website Southfront, a “dirty bomb” constitutes a container with radioactive isotopes and explosive charge. In case of exploding the charge, the container is to be destroyed, and the radioactive substance is to be pulverised by a blast wave that produces radioactive contamination at [sic] large areas […]’.

Possible consequences of a radiation accident at the Zaporozhye nuclear plant, Russia Today News, 24-10-2022

So this is indeed an extremely grave concern, so much so that the official international news outlet of the Russian government, Russia Today, made it their main headline throughout the day yesterday [see the additional links at the bottom]:

This hour’s top headlines on RT International. Russia Defence’s ministry says ‘Kiev is in the last stages of creating a so-called Dirty Bomb for a false flag attack’. Moscow also says Ukraine has requested nuclear weapon technology from Britain.
[…]
So Russia’s Foreign Minister has raised concerns about a dirty bomb being used by Kiev in the Ukraine conflict. He was speaking at the annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club. Sergey Lavrov dismissed claims by some Western countries that it was Moscow planning to use such a device.

Sergey Lavrov [voice over in English]
Detailed information indicating the institutions that can do this was transmitted through the Minister of Defence with his colleagues from the United States, Great Britain, France and Turkey. The unfounded claims of our Western colleagues that this is all fiction and Russia itself plans to do something like that to blame these Zelinsky regime later. It’s not a serious conversation. Some of our interlocutors suggested discussing the information we have at a professional military level. This is an approach that we’ve supported.

Oksana Boyko, Host of RT’s ‘Worlds apart’
Foreign Minister Lavrov said that uh Russia is eager to do whatever possible to bring Ukraine’s Western partners uh into the discussions about the potentially very dangerous, if not apocalyptic, uh consequences of uh such a false flag attack, if it indeed uh is uh carried out. And while many of Lavrov’s uh colleagues or some of Lavrov’s colleagues, for example, uh the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, dismissed those allegations as, quote, transparently false, uhm the foreign Minister also indicated that uhm such allegations were met with some professional interests and some of the colleagues – he didn’t specify who –, uh but uh some of the countries and uh as far as we know, Russia has reached out to France, the United States, the United Kingdom and Turkey. Some of those countries have expressed uh an interest in discussing the evidence that Russia has in the professional format – that is, among the intelligence uh officers and military experts. But I have to tell you that uh something like this is not really original. Uhm if you remember the … the way that the Syrian war was carried out, we had constant allegations of uh false flag attacks. And this is essentially the way that Russia uh has learned to uhm counteract them to … to try to be pre-emptive whenever it has allegations or whenever it has … whenever it has any intelligence on the potential acquisition of dangerous materials, uh it tries to bring attention of the worldwide audience to it. And I have to say uh that it’s really understandable that the West would try to exonerate Ukraine and uh accuse Russia of all the uh possible crimes. But there is already a track record, an official track record of the Ukrainian officials expressing direct interest in acquiring nuclear weapons. For example, President Zelensky, when speaking at the Munich Security Conference earlier this year, uh he expressly said that Ukraine was looking into that possibility. And what surprised uh Russia at that point is that despite the fact that non-proliferation is a stated policy in the world – it’s a stated goal –, nonetheless uh none of Ukraine’s Western partners said anything against uh that possibility. That’s why Russia is indeed taking it seriously.

Moscow says it will address the claims about a dirty bomb directly to the UN Secretary General. The UN itself has already addressed those concerns, quote advising both parties not to escalate the situation. The NATO Secretary General also dismissed Russia’s claims, calling them absurd, because he said Ukraine would never use such a device on its own territory.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, however, the threat is very real and he said ‘third parties appear to be involved in handing Kiev nuclear technologies’.

Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov [voice over in English]
According to the information we have, two organisations in Ukraine have specific instructions to create the so-called dirty bomb. The work is in its final stage. We also have information about contacts between the Ukrainian President’s Office and British representatives on the issue of possibly obtaining technology for creating a nuclear weapon.

I spoke earlier to US Marine and geopolitical analyst John Mark Dougan. He fears that Kiev is trying to escalate the war to further draw in NATO.

John Mark Dougan
We’ve seen what they have been doing uh up to now, their acts of terrorism, uh starting with the bombing of Daria Dugan and blowing up the bridges. Uhm and they are escalating things uh until the point of no return. They want I – and I can’t understand why – they want the US to be involved in nuclear war. They have that much hatred towards Russia. The West has been engaging in a lot of very dirty tactics lately and everything that they’ve been engaging, like the pipeline, uh the attacks on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, uh everything they’ve been engaging in, then they have been pointing the fingers, blaming on Russia, when we all know that it’s … it’s not Russia. I mean: everybody with half a brain understands this. And they’re going to do the same thing with this. So the question is: ‘is the West going to help them?

[My opinion, not RT’s]
Given that the situation is not looking good for the Zelensky regime on the military front (hence the recent deployment of 4,700 soldiers from the US 101st Airborne Division in Romania), let us hope that common sense will prevail within the entourage of the former comedian-turned-green-t-shirt-wearer and that they will not activate their own version of the ‘Samson Option.
